Less than a century ago, computers were giant devices, larger than an apartment. Nowadays, there are laptops which are smaller than a book. Engineers all around the world kept [to invent|to inventing|inventing|invent] and improving computer devices for decades. The computer mouse appeared in the middle of this development—the user needed a convenient manipulator [work|to work|working|to working] with objects on the screen and to give commands to the computer.

The first computer mouse was introduced at the interactive devices exhibition in California. It was presented by Douglas Engelbart from the Stanford Research Institute. He showed what it would look like to work on a personal computer of the future on December 9, 1968. He was looking forward to [demonstrating|demonstrate|to demonstrating|to demonstrate] the device. In the presentation, Engelbart not only typed a text using the usual keyboard, but could also select and move any word on the screen with the mouse.

It was very different from modern devices—the controller consisted of a massive wooden case with a single button in the corner. At the bottom of the case, there were two perpendicular disks. This allowed the cursor [moving|move|to moving|to move] in four directions along the X and Y axes. The cursor itself on the screen looked like a light spot. Only later the cursor was improved [looking|to look|look|to looking] like an arrow.

Engelbart patented the invention in 1970. Then the controller got its usual name—the wire that connected the device to the computer looked like the tail of a mouse. Engelbart imagined people all over the world [use|to use|to using|using] the device daily. And he was right!
