In the very centre of Asia, on the border with Mongolia, there is the Republic of Tyva, which is a part of the Russian Federation. 80 % of the population of this republic are Tuvans. Their traditional religion is shamanism.
The Tuvans still have particular respect for the family and "feed" the fire, and they worship bushes and trees. In the old days, the members of the family divided everything obtained during the hunt equally, regardless of who brought what. Likewise, the inhabitants of one settlement shared the meat of domestic animals.
Children are the biggest treasure for the Tuvans. The Tuvans do not kiss them but smell them, considering such a way of showing affection to be the highest manifestation of their tender feelings. In addition, the Tuvans had a custom to give a child several names, including ugly ones, so that it would be more difficult for evil spirits to steal a child's soul.
Traditional clothes of the Tuvans were made from animal skins and felt. Leather boots with a multi-layer felt sole and a curved nose served as footwear. Among the Tuvans, both men and women wore long hair.
The Tuvans are famous all over the world for their throat singing and the national khuresh wrestling. Among the Tuvan khuresh wrestlers, there are athletes who also became world champions in sumo wrestling. The most spectacular competitions are held during the main Tuvan holiday Naadym in the middle of August. This holiday of livestock breeders has a thousand-year history and began as a sacrifice in honour of the host spirit of the area and the ancestors.
