Brazilian Carnival is about two hundred years old. It is the largest national holiday in Brazil. Brazilians celebrate it forty days before Easter. This festival means the beginning of Lent. The carnival lasts 4 days and 4 nights.
The festival is a competition among samba schools. Fourteen dance schools traditionally take part in it. The performance of one school lasts one hour and twenty minutes. Most dancers can prepare for each new show for a whole year. Each performance is a combination of music, rhythm, bright costumes, decorated floats and samba dance.
During the carnival, there are about two hundred balls in different parts of the city. The most famous of them is the ball in the Palace of Copacabana. This is a place where rich people come to celebrate the holiday. There are famous actors, politicians, football stars and models.
