Theatre as a type of art appeared in Ancient Greece in 534 BC. Its elements were present in different ancient cultures to a certain extent even earlier. Theatres present plays of different genres. But still we all know what a regular theatre looks like: you come to the special building, take your seat and watch a play performed on the stage. Another type of theatre appeared in New York in 1975. It was called playback theatre and meant that stories of the spectators were played back to them. Of course, it differs from the regular theatre. When you come to a playback performance, you can become the author of the performance. Usually playback performances have a certain topic, for example, "The way of faith" or "Who am I?" and spectators who come to such performances tell stories from their real lives related to the topic. Certainly, only those who want to. Actors listen to them and make an improvisation to show this story in a way they see it. It's always interesting to watch what actors will add to the story or from what angle they will show it. But it's also very important that actors are careful and respectful not to hurt spectator's feelings by their interpretation of his or her life. Usually the team of playback theatre consists only of 5 actors, 1 conductor who leads the conversation with the audience and 1 or 2 musicians who improvise with music to accompany the performance. There are no special decorations and all actors wear only black clothes. Of course, they are not just people from the street, to become a playback actor you need to study for a year, and they understand special language – the set of tools that you can use to make improvisation and still be a team in this process. They can not act just the way they want to. They follow certain internal rules that they've studied. From the USA playback theatre started spreading all over the world. In 1980, the original Playback Company was invited to Australia and New Zealand. In 1984, the founder of playback theatre Jonathon Fox travelled to Japan and in 1986 – to Switzerland. Then the International Playback Theatre Network was founded and now they regularly hold international conferences. Today in Moscow there are several trainers who teach playback theatre. New teams of playback actors appear and perform every year, but it's still a new direction of culture for our country.
