ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS IN MOSCOW
Together with many social and economic benefits, urbanization also causes many environmental problems. Moscow is no exception. The list of its crucial issues includes air and water pollution, forest conservation and waste management.
Cars account for 90% of air pollution in Moscow while only 10% of it is caused by industry. It’s not surprising because the number of motor vehicles on the roads has skyrocketed in recent years. As a result, there are lots of traffic jams in Moscow, and cars that are stuck in traffic jams consume more fuel and produce more pollution.
This situation can be improved if drivers start using high-quality fuel, and cars that do not meet environmental standards will not be allowed to enter the city. Moreover, the use of hybrid cars will also make air quality better. Unfortunately, today such cars are mainly manufactured in Japan and the United States. Another measure would be to create jobs in the Moscow Region so that fewer people will need to travel to and from their workplaces.
The air quality issue cannot be resolved without greenbelts because they act like our main air filters. Statistics show that Moscow has one tree per resident. So, if we lose a tree we can say that one Muscovite will fall ill. This is why we need to set up parks, gardens and nature reserves in addition to building up social infrastructure and entertainment centres. Another important issue for Moscow is conservation of the existing woodlands around the city. Any use of these areas for anything other than recreation must be prohibited.
Due to air pollution on Moscow, rainwater is also contaminated with various pollutants. This polluted rainwater enters the Moskva River and deteriorates the quality of its water. To improve water quality it is necessary to supervise environmental standards in the areas which are located along the banks of the river. Moreover, we need to build new wastewater treatment facilities and also to modernise the ones that already exist.
All in all, Moscow has a high environmental impact that can be felt globally. That is why we must help our environment by behaving responsibly and raising public awareness of Moscow’s environmental issues.
Which of the following actions will NOT lead to the improvement of air quality in Moscow?
- 1. Building new wastewater treatment facilities.
- 2. Creating greenbelt recreation sites.
- 3. Conservation of the existing woodlands.
- 4. Building up social infrastructure.
- 5. Creating jobs in the Moscow Region.
- 6. Manufacturing hybrid cars.
- 7. Using low-quality fuel in cars.
