Read the text about the impact of the Internet on ecology and decide if the statements below are True, False, or Not stated.
Have you ever thought about what impact one email can have on the environment? How does a selfie uploaded to social media, a message sent to your friend, or a Google search affect the ecological situation on our planet?
The actions we perform on the Internet aren't as harmless as we are accustomed to thinking. Charging computers, producing gadgets, saving information, and server maintenance demand a lot of energy, and energy production remains a great source of environmental pollution. For example, in 2025, the servers will be consuming one-fifth of all energy produced all over the world.
For instance, even a simple information request on Google leaves the same carbon footprint as a sixteen-metre car ride. It may seem too little to talk about, but consider how many people do such requests day by day.
The delivery of spam emails requires the same amount of energy that can heat 2 million American homes every day. Its carbon footprint is similar to that of 3 million vehicles. When you send one letter, four grams of carbon dioxide are produced, and if you attach an image to it, it becomes 46 grams more.
The main issue of streaming services is the constant growth of the amount of data. Video files form eighty per cent of all information that the servers keep. Worse still, sixty per cent of these videos are watched online. This type of media consumption produces about 300 million tons of CO₂ per year. The same amount of carbon dioxide is produced by Spain annually.
Choose the correct option.
The Internet is harmless to the environment.
People can't live without search engines (like Google).
