Historical background
[ ]
The Evenks are people in Russia who live mainly in the Siberian taiga, a vast forest area stretching from the Yenisei River to the Pacific Ocean. They live in various regions, including the Evenk Autonomous Okrug, the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), the Amur Region, and the Krasnoyarsk Krai.
[ ]
The Evenks traditionally lead a nomadic or semi-nomadic lifestyle that is closely linked to the natural environment. Their main economic activities include reindeer herding, hunting, and fishing. Reindeer are central to the lives of the Evenks as they provide transportation, clothing, and food.
[ ]
The relationship between the Evenks and Russia began in the 17th century during the Russian conquest of Siberia. Russian explorers and traders went into Evenk lands, trading goods and sharing Russian culture and religion. Eventually, the Evenks became part of the growing Russian Empire. This changed their traditional lifestyle, but they were able to keep most of their traditions.

The Evenki language, belonging to the Tungusic language group, is spoken by the Evenks and is an important part of their cultural heritage. The Evenki language faces the threat of extinction. Efforts are being made to preserve the language through educational programs, cultural initiatives, and documentation.
