Read the text about Inca culture and answer the questions below.
This magnificent Inca fortress — Sacsayhuamén — is a real archaeological treasure. It is believed to have been built during the reign of Tupac Inca. It is not a remote destination as the ancient fortress is situated close to the city of Cusco and can be reached after only a ten-minute drive or a forty-five-minute walk. Famous for its tightly constructed stone walls, with each piece of stone cut in a unique way and joined together without the use of mortar, Sacsayhuamén stands as a testament to the clever engineers employed by the Inca. It took over twenty thousand men to build this fortress, using stone transported from nearby quarries, but sadly only forty per cent of the original site has been preserved.
While Sacsayhuamén was used by the Incas for ceremonial purposes, it became a Spanish property later and was used as a stronghold by the Spanish invaders during a famous battle in 1536.
When the Spanish seized control over the city of Cusco, they rebuilt it in their style using stones taken from Sacsayhuamén, leaving behind the heavy stones of the lower walls and towers. The ruins of the fortress still remain, however, serving as a symbol of one of the most important moments in Inca history. They are a must-see for those who want to learn more about the remarkable civilisation of Inca. While at Sacsayhuaméan, visitors should also take the time to visit the ruins of Tambomachay, Qengo and Puca Pucara nearby.
