Lev Landau

Lev Davidovich Landau was a Soviet theoretical physicist who made significant contributions to condensed matter physics, particle physics, and quantum mechanics. He was awarded the 1962 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his pioneering work in theoretical physics, especially his theories of condensed matter, such as liquid helium, and his contributions to quantum mechanics, especially his theory of superfluidity".

Landau was born in Baku, Azerbaijan, in 1908. He showed an early talent for mathematics and physics, and entered Leningrad State University in 1922. He graduated in 1927, and then worked as a research assistant. In 1932, he moved to Moscow, where he worked at the Institute for Physical Problems.

Landau made his first major contribution to physics in 1932, when he developed a theory of superfluidity. This theory explained the strange properties of liquid helium, which flows without friction and has a very low viscosity. Landau's theory was a major breakthrough in the understanding of condensed matter physics.

Landau was arrested in 1938, and spent two years in a labour camp. He was released in 1940, but was not allowed to return to his work at the Institute for Physical Problems. He was eventually allowed to return to his work in 1946, and continued to make significant contributions to physics until his death in 1968.

Landau was a brilliant physicist who made major contributions to many areas of physics. He was also a gifted teacher and mentor, and his work has had a profound impact on the development of physics.
