Andrei Sakharov

Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov was a Soviet nuclear physicist and human rights activist. He was born in Moscow, Russia, on May 21, 1921. He studied physics at Moscow State University and graduated in 1945. After graduation, he worked on the Soviet atomic bomb project.

In the 1950s, Sakharov became one of the scientists who developed the first Soviet hydrogen bomb, which was tested in 1953. He made a significant contribution to the development of Soviet nuclear weapons. By the late 1950s, however, Sakharov had become concerned about the moral and political outcomes of his nuclear weapons work. After he started agitation against the use of nuclear bombs, he was banned from all military-related research.

After 1965, Sakharov returned to fundamental science and began working on particle physics and cosmology, particularly the search for an explanation for the baryon asymmetry of the universe. He was the first scientist to introduce the concept of two universes called sheets, which may have been linked at the time of the Big Bang. He also proposed the idea of induced gravity (or emergent gravity) as an alternative theory of quantum gravity.

In the 1960s, Sakharov became a human rights activist. He opposed the Soviet government and stood up against human rights abuse. Sakharov was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975 for his work on human rights. Later, he moved from science to political activity.

Sakharov died of a sudden heart attack on 14 December 1989, at the age of 68.

He was a brilliant scientist who made significant contributions to the development of the atomic and hydrogen bombs. He was also a courageous man of high moral values, who protested the use of nuclear energy against people.
