Henry Ford was born on July 30, 1863, in Springwells Township in Michigan, to Mary. In a group of 4 boys and two girls, he was the oldest of six children. His father was an Irishman from County Cork who immigrated to the United States in 1847 and lived on a farm.
Henry Ford was fascinated with mechanics since he was a child. By the age of 12, he was spending most of his free time in a tiny vehicle shop that he had set up. He built the first steam engine there when he was 15 years old.
Afterwards, he worked as a machinist's assistant in Detroit, at James F. Flower and Brothers' shops and the Detroit Dry Dock Company's facility. He spent a year in southern Michigan after finishing his internship in 1882, building up and repairing Westinghouse steam engines. He began working as an engineer in July 1891. On November 6, 1893, he was promoted to chief engineer. Later, Thomas Edison would work with Henry Ford and supported him in each business deal.
Henry Ford began his career as an automobile manufacturer in the winter of 1893 when he built a modest one-cylinder petrol model inspired by his interest in internal combustion engines. On a wooden table in the kitchen of Ford's house, the first Ford engine flickered to life. His first vehicle, which was a frame-mounted with four bicycle wheels, was powered by a later edition of that motor. The Quadricycle, Ford's first automobile, was built in June 1896.
