Should students do more group work in class?

Many students enjoy working with their friends inclass, but teachers often tell students to work quietly andalone. Is this the best way to learn, or should students domore group work in class?

Without a doubt, there are many advantages togroup work. Some people argue that it creates a morecomfortable classroom environment because studentscan ask each other questions that they may beembarrassed to ask a teacher. In addition, group workencourages students to listen to the opinions of others.This improves teamwork, which is an important skill in theworkplace.

On the other hand, there are also arguments againstgroup work in classrooms. Firstly, students may becomedistracted and chat about subjects that are not related toschool. As a result, no work is achieved. Anotherdisadvantage is that during group work, only certainopinions are heard. For example, one student may try tocontrol the group, or another could be too shy to speak,making group work quite unfair.

All in all, there are both advantages and disadvantagesto doing group work. It seems to me that some tasks areperformed better when people work together as a team.However, others, like writing, are probably best tackledalone.
