Nowadays, with a significant breakthrough in online educational tools, gamification of online learning has been becoming more and more developed. Even online games are now being used for teaching purposes. However, there are arguments for and against the effectiveness of learning through playing video games.

There is no doubt that video games specially designed for teaching have major advantages and have their educational potential. First of all, psychologists state that people learn things better through solving some interesting quests. For instance, students can not even notice how they have learned something if they need it to complete a level in their favourite game. Secondly, many children and teenagers are really fond of online games. Experiencing an interactive story similar to the games they play on a daily basis might amuse them as well as get them more involved in school subjects.

On the other hand, this method of teaching has got serious drawbacks. One drawback is that students may be focused on the games themselves and not want to go deeper into the subject. Thus, if you play an interactive maths game, you may try to guess all answers instead of solving the tasks. Another disadvantage is that online games encourage students to spend more and more time online, which is harmful to their health. For example, spending more than two hours per day looking at the screen of your gadget or computer may cause blurred vision, headaches, and other problems.

All things considered, learning through online games has both supporters and opponents. In my opinion, we need to accept technological changes and get the most from them. Nevertheless, we shouldn’t forget about the main purpose of education (which is getting knowledge) and make new tools serve it, not replace it.
