Four graceful ways to end a conversation

Adapted from: Inc.com

You've just had a really interesting conversation with a potential friend or classmate. Or maybe you've had a chat that was a tedious waste of your time. Either way, the conversation is done and you would like to move on, but you don't want to seem rude or uninterested. What do you do?

A. Sometimes the easiest approach is to be direct. Say openly "I’m sorry, Enjoy the rest of the evening." Psychologists suggest accompanying this statement with a handshake, and then moving on.

B. Excuse yourself and explain you need to make an important call. Say: "Please excuse me, I need to make a call now because ” As you exit, make sure you do in fact make a call (or at the very least appear to be making one).

C. Ask to connect on social media. Emphasise that you enjoyed the talk, saying something like “” and then ask how to find the person online. Usually such request is a a good way to signal that today's conversation is over, but you would like to stay in touch.

D. If you and the other person could potentially do something together, or you would like to become friends, say: “” and set a date. That will give the two of you a chance to meet again. And it also means you can both move on for today and find other interesting people to start new conversations with.
