There is / there are

Конструкция there is / there are употребляется тогда, когда речь идёт о неизвестных вещах и их местоположении.

Переводить с английского языка на русский подобные предложения нужно с предлога места: сначала говорим, где, а потом что там находится.

There is a book on the table. — На столе лежит книга.

Выбор между there is и there are зависит от того, в каком числе (единственном или множественном) употреблено следующее за этим оборотом существительное.

Единственное число: There is a pen in the bag.

Множественное число: There are two pens in the bag.

Примеры с отрицанием и вопросом:

There isn't a cinema in the city.

There aren't any cinemas in the city.

Is there a book on the table?

Are there any books on the table?

Обрати внимание на то, что неисчисляемые существительные согласуются с глаголом в единственном числе.

My Room
