Christmas Colours
Many people consider Christmas as their favourite time of the year. There are many colours which symbolise this famous holiday. All the colours come from European traditions and customs.
Green is a popular colour at Christmas. Evergreen plants, for example, mistletoe, holly or ivy, were used to decorate houses during long dark winters. The brightest example of using evergreens is a Christmas tree. The green plants reminded people about spring and inspired them to think that winter would not last forever.
The colour red has a religious meaning. It is the colour of the holly berries which represent the blood of Jesus who died on the cross. Besides, red was the colour of St Nicholas's uniform which later became Santa Claus's suit.
Gold is the colour of light and warmth. A warm and comfortable atmosphere is especially important during cold and long winters. Besides, gold is the colour of the stars which are Christmas decorations.
