A pet detective
Jamie Katz is no ordinary detective. She doesn't solve crimes or chase down criminals. Instead, she specializes in reuniting families with their missing pets. Based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Jamie has become South Florida's go-to pet detective, known for her impressive success rate and love for the animals she helps.
Jamie's journey as a pet detective began over two decades ago when she volunteered to help her neighbor find a missing cat. “The search took me several months and I had to miss school to look for the cat, but when I finally brought Spotty to her owner their happiness made it all worth it”.
Fast forward to today, and Jamie, now 36, makes a living looking for missing pets. In just the past few weeks, Jamie has successfully tracked down a runaway French bulldog that escaped from a yard and helped bring back a stolen Chihuahua.
Since founding her company less than two years ago, Jamie has taken on 240 cases and successfully resolved 150 of them. Most of the time, she reunites animals that have escaped from their homes, but she also helps with stolen pets, which make up about 10 percent of her cases.
One of her most heartwarming success stories involved reuniting a French bulldog named Brunno with his owners after being missing for 180 days, which is equivalent to three and a half dog years. Their reunion was filmed and the video went viral with more than 1 000000 views. “This video made me famous for a while,” said Jamie. “But I didn’t really like all that attention. The only good thing about it is that lots of people learned about pet detectives and now they know that there are professionals who are ready to help them”.
“I can find anybody,” continued Katz. “I love the research part of it — and I don’t give up.” What sets Jamie apart is her unique skill set. She is a registered private investigator with a degree in criminology. She turned one of the rooms in her house into a laboratory where she can run basic tests. Jamie even trained her own dogs to pick up the scent of missing pets. “They love solving cases with me. And I love the fact that my job lets me take my pets with me everywhere”.- she said.
Pet detective services all over the world aren’t cheap. For instance, Jamie charges a fee ranging from \(305 to \)605 for a case and says that it’s the medium price on the market. For the minimum fee, clients receive bright yellow signs with a photo of the lost or stolen pet, a contact number, and the reward amount. These signs are strategically placed throughout the neighborhood, and Jamie dedicates two weeks to search the area and checks any tips.
Oliver, one of Katz's recent clients, said: “Jamie guided me through the entire process. She was there when I was losing hope. Day after day she kept telling me something like “Let’s do something else, let’s get your dog back”. And all our efforts paid back when we managed to locate Bravo 50 miles away from the place where he was last seen. I believe Jamie’s reward was well spent money and I don’t regret it one bit.”
