An old shirt with a secret

One morning Linda Hoffman decided it was time for a spring cleaning. Her house was full of memories and old-fashioned things, and she wanted to start fresh. She went around the house, room by room, collecting her children’s old toys, her husband's clothes and her own outdated yet high-quality outfits. By the late afternoon a big bag of clothes and a couple of boxes were ready for a new life with different owners. Linda put them in her car and headed to the local charity store. “I don’t need any money for these things, I just want  them to make someone happy”, she thought.

Little did Linda know that one specific shirt held a secret that would change her life…

The secret belonged to her husband, Bob Hoffman, who had been quietly planning a surprise for his wife for six years. He wanted to make something special for her. Many years ago he heard her saying “I wish I could live in Italy” and he came up with a plan. After each salary he would hide some money in the pocket of his old shirt, saving up for an unforgettable vacation to Italy. The \(8000 that he managed to collect, were a symbol of his love to his wife and a thing that he planned to tell her about very soon, at their Wedding Anniversary in September.  Unfortunately, the shirt with the money ended up in Linda's bag of donated clothes. Two days went by, and the Hoffmans’ life was quite usual. But then Bob found that the shirt was missing. He had to tell Linda about his secret and the panic set in. They rushed to the charity store filled with anxiety.  The store employees were kind and understanding and did their best to help. But the missing shirt seemed like a needle in a haystack, a small object lost among hundreds of donated items. Linda felt very bad because of her mistake and started to apologise to Bob, when her husband told her: “Don’t be hard on yourself. I’m not mad. The house really needed a good cleaning. And it’s just money. It comes and goes. The most important thing is that we are together.” They went home and tried to get back to their normal life. The next morning Linda’s phone rang.  A store employee called to say that the shirt was found, carefully hidden among a pile of clothes. The \)8000 was right where Bob had left it. “Come and get it”, he said.

"I would describe it as a miracle," Linda said, her eyes filled with tears, as she held the shirt close to her heart. "All of it. My husband's kindness and love, the employees' understanding of our mistake and their honesty."

That weekend the Hoffmans threw a party for the store employees and their families. “That’s the least we could do to thank them for saving our dreams”, said Bob. When everyone gathered around, they proudly announced their soon leave for such a long-awaited vacation. Holding the tickets in her hands Linda felt the happiest person in the world.
