A Dane's best friend
In the United States, about 100 million people own a bicycle. Most only ride them a few times a year. But most Danish people not only own bikes, but they also ride them regularly. Nine out of ten Danes have a bike, and an average person rides at least a mile (1.6 km) every day. They do not just ride bikes for fun. They use them to get to work, to take their children places, and even to carry heavy things.
Danes ride their bicycles no matter what the weather is like. It could be sunny, raining, hailing, or even snowing, and cyclists will still be biking wherever they need to go. If a trip is less than three miles, one-quarter of those trips will be taken by bicycle. They have a saying in Denmark: "A bicycle is a Dane's best friend." Bicycling is easy and popular in Denmark. The ground is rather flat, so people can ride long distances without tiring. In Denmark's cities, there are special traffic lanes for bikers.
You will see many kinds of bikes on Denmark's roads. Serious bikers ride racing bikes. Parents use bikes with seats in the back for their kids. A cargo bike is easy to notice. It looks like an oversized tricycle with a large box in the front. It can be used to carry kids, groceries, and just about anything else that will fit. They are also used for commercial deliveries and transportation.
Many Danish children learn to ride a bike when they are two or three years old. They start with small bikes without pedals. This teaches them how to balance. Once they start school, they learn about safety and traffic rules as part of their school day.
Bicycles arrived in Denmark in the 1880s, about 60 years after they were invented. They quickly became popular. In the 1920s and 1930s, people from every social class were biking in cities and in the countryside. Gas and other supplies were hard to get during World War II, so people turned to bikes as their main means of transport. Cars returned in the 1950s, and they were seen as a symbol of high social status. But a lot of Danes continued to use bikes regularly. As people were becoming aware of the pollution caused by cars, Copenhagen began instituting "Car-Free Sundays." Some people even protested to make the city car-free!
Today, more and more people are choosing bikes over cars. Riding a bike in traffic can be dangerous. Many riders are afraid of being hit by a car. Denmark is making efforts to keep riders safe. It is developing cycling-only superhighways. Some of the existing highways and streets are being changed for bikers. Their surface should be suitable for riding, and traffic lights should be timed for the average cyclist's speed. Denmark has about 7,500 miles (12,000 km) of bike paths. Almost 250 miles (400 km) of those cycling routes are in Copenhagen alone. They are all separated from car lanes and sidewalks for safety.
Riding a bicycle instead of driving has benefits both for personal health and the health of the environment. For people who work at a desk all day, it gives a way to exercise regularly. Also, it is fun. People who move to Denmark and do not know how to ride a bike usually learn very quickly. They soon find that their bicycle has become their best friend.
