Past Simple and Past Continuous
Past Simple или простое прошедшее время обозначает:

1. Действия в прошлом, которые происходили одно за другим.

   I opened the door of my house, took off the shoes and sat on the sofa.

2. Действие, которое произошло в указанное время в прошлом.

   Yesterday I went to my friend's party.

3. Действие, которое прервало другое длительное действие в прошлом.

   When I opened the door, my mum was cooking dinner.

Past Continuous (was/were + -ing) или прошедшее длительное время обозначает:

1. Действие, которое происходило в указанное время в прошлом.

   She was watching TV at 7 o'clock yesterday evening.

2. Действие, которое происходило в прошлом и было прервано другим действием.

   Jerry was having a bath when someone knocked at the door.

3. Действия, одновременно происходившие в прошлом.

   I was working while my daughter was watching TV yesterday evening.
