Modal verbs
Категория вероятности в английском языке передаётся рядом модальных глаголов. Рассмотрим некоторые из них.
Must имеет значение «должно быть» и показывает уверенность говорящего в верности своего суждения.
Пример: You must be tired, you have been working the whole night.
May — модальный глагол, который показывает, что вероятность нашего предположения около 50 %. Обычно мы переводим в таких случаях предложения при помощи словосочетаний «возможно, что», «может быть, что».
Пример: The book you are looking for may be on my desk or in the bookcase.
Can't выражает уверенность в том, что действие не могло произойти.
Пример: It can't be warm in the mountains in winter.
There are two extra phrases.
- You may leave it at work
- It can't be warm this time
- The bus must be late
- It may start at 8
- He must have a problem
- May it eat some trash
- It can't be poisoned with it
- B: What happened?
- I can't tear it like that
- B: The thief must have taken it
- It must be mine
- He can't have problems
Where is my umbrella? I can't find it. — [ ].
What is the weather like in Moscow? — Take your coat. [ ].
Is the bus late or am I late? — You came on time. [ ]. It is a common thing in our city.
What time does the lesson start? — I do not know for sure. [ ].
What happened to Andrew? He is so upset. — [ ].
My dog got sick. — [ ]? You always give it fresh food. [ ].
A: My bag is torn.
