Three teenagers—Lena, Danil and Artem—have to make a presentation on an environmental problem. Now they are discussing which topic they should talk about.
Lena: I think the biggest problem nowadays is deforestation—the process of cutting off trees to build new roads or create places where to grow crops or let animals graze. Trees absorb CO₂ and produce oxygen, which is vital for humanity to keep on existing. And the rainforests are home to a great number of diverse animal and plant species, which sometimes are essential to create new medicine or support the natural balance. Still, a lot of trees are being cut down every day, and people don't know enough about the problem and how they can help. I think we should talk about this problem.
Danil: I agree with Lena that deforestation is a big and important problem, but I really think that waste is much more critical now, and this is what people can actually influence easily. The throw-away society is growing bigger and stronger, and I think that it's important to educate teenagers about recycling. It's so easy not to buy plastic bags but to take your own reusable ones with you. It's also not very difficult to use your own coffee cup and multi-use plastic bottle to reduce unnecessary waste. And then recycle everything we have to use—like plastic bottles from milk, paper and glass. I think we really need to talk about it.
Artem: I would agree with Danil that we should talk about something that is more approachable for our classmates, something they can really influence, but I think we should start with rubbish in the streets, since we have really few opportunities to recycle in small towns here in Russia, but everyone can just go out and help clean the streets and forests. Moreover, we should educate them not to throw anything in the street in the first place.
