The Unexpected Find
It was in early September. The trees were covered with bright golden leaves. Pete was strolling in the woods not far from his house. He was not alone. His dog Rex was following his steps. It was a two-year-old German shepherd, and Pete could always feel safe and sound. Pete was a third-year student—he studied Chemistry at college. He was a lonely guy because he was interested neither in modern gadgets nor in nightclubs and parties. Pete was fond of history, and books were his best friends.
While Pete and Rex were strolling in the woods, Pete thought about old ships, pirates and buried treasures. He had a rich fantasy, and sometimes he even got a bit frightened when he imagined how pirates had been robbing ships. As he was thinking of pirates, Rex ran to him with a strange sack in his mouth. Pete opened it and got shocked! There was nothing in it except for a big gold coin at the very bottom.
Suddenly Pete heard a strange sound. Someone was there, not far from the two friends! Rex had heard the sound too and started growling. After about ten minutes of rustling, Pete was at the peak of his fright. The sound seemed to come closer and closer. Rex began barking aggressively. Pete was keeping the coin tight and feeling sorry he had no friends to call. At last, the bushes near him went on moving. The lower branches parted, and the two friends—the guy and his dog—saw a cute little hedgehog with two apples on its needles. It was rustling with the fallen leaves and puffing.
Pete felt frustrated. His fantasy had been playing tricks with him. There were no pirates; it was only the hedgehog! He took Rex home and ran to the closest museum. In the museum, Pete showed his gold coin. The expert concluded that it was about five hundred years old. Probably, some pirates had buried their treasures in these woods a long time ago.
