Upcycling

Everybody heard the word recycling. But what about upcycling? Do you know what it means?

Upcycling is also known as creative reuse. This is the process of transforming old things, waste materials, useless, or unwanted products into new materials or products. The definition of upcycling is the opposite of downcycling. Downcycling is the process of converting material into other materials (not all the time of better quality). These terms were first mentioned in 1994.

And what is the difference between upcycling and recycling? The main idea is that the latter uses materials like paper, metal, plastic, or glass and breaks them down to create a new product (typically of more inferior quality). As you have already noticed, upcycling doesn't mean breaking down materials but rather sorting and reusing them in a different, often more attractive way.

What can be upcycled? In fact everything! With the use of upcycling you can buy less, waste less so as a result you can help to protect the environment. Moreover, it is said that if we look at upcycling from a bigger perspective, we can predict that in the future, it leads to the reduction of CO2 emissions. This is due to the lifetimes of the used materials being extended.

The application of upcycling is quite wide. We can notice upcycled objects in Art, fashion, manufacturing, and even food. Speaking about the last one, leftovers for example can be given to farm animals. Restaurants can provide the people in need with food that wasn't eaten.

Upcycling has shown significant growth across the world. We can track this information for instance with the help of different marketplaces where recycled things are sold. The number of things sold has grown considerably.
