London is not only the place to walk and visit museums and art galleries, but it is also the city where the Royal Family lives. Queen Elizabeth II and her family live at her official residence, Buckingham Palace.

Originally, Buckingham Palace was built as a big house by the Duke of Buckingham for his wife. George IV began transforming it into a palace in 1826. Queen Victoria was the first monarch to live at Buckingham Palace.

The Palace is enormous: there are nearly 600 rooms, 78 bathrooms, a cinema, a swimming pool and a post office. The room where some important banquets are held is called the Ballroom. There is a long horseshoe-shaped table at which 160 people can sit at once.

The members of the Royal Family appear on the balcony on special occasions to greet the people. When the Queen is away in summer, the Palace is open to the public, and everyone can visit it.

The Queen Victoria Memorial, created by sculptor Sir Thomas Brock in 1911, is in front of Buckingham Palace.

The Royal Mews is the place where the royal coaches, horses and cars are kept. Many people can come to see the ceremony of Changing of the Guard in front of the palace.
