A. While some people think playing sports is a waste of time, in reality, it can be precious for people's lives. Whether to go in for sports for competitions or just for fun, playing sports provides us with health improvements, and creates strong characters and successful people to look up to. Many children see athletes as positive role models. We can also meet other people with similar interests; therefore, when we join in a sport, it could help us create long-lasting friendships.

B. Professional athletes often start their career in their teenage years. They often come from ordinary families when they decide what to choose for their future sport. When their talent gets noticed, they are invited to sports clubs where they can make a career out of playing. Sometimes they can go on playing for their universities and then head into a professional league. If they want to be in a solo sport, such as golf, they can earn sponsors.

C. What does it take to be an athlete? Many will answer that it is competitiveness. Sure, you need motivation and goal-setting techniques, but that is not all. Athletes need determination and willpower, and above all this, they need self-confidence. Their coaches help them to develop these characteristics and teach them success skills. If they play team sports, such as football and hockey, they will learn teamwork. To score a goal takes effort from the whole team working together.

D. Group sports, such as tennis and basketball, make the entire team share the same objective. Playing sport in teams first appeared over two thousand years ago in Persia, where they played polo. This was only for the people who had a lot of money because they needed to afford a horse in order to play. In China, they played an early form of football called cuju which emerged about the same time as polo.

E. There were no medals at the first Olympics. The winner had a crown of olive leaves placed on his head which came from a sacred tree at Olympia. This symbolised he was a victor and had glory. Only the man who won was recognised as a champion. The modern games now give out three medals to the competitors. In university and professional games, they compete for trophies. Some other competitions offer money as a prize to win.

F. Playing sports not only is hard on the body but the mind as well. Athletes are under an immense amount of stress. Modern sportsmen now can take advantage of a variety of options to keep healthy and relieve tension. For example, they can have a sports psychologist to talk to and a dietitian to help them eat healthily. Athletes can also get sports massages and have access to individual training sessions. Work-life balance is important, and sportsmen try to live a private life away from the game field.

G. Sports are a necessary part of life, so it is very good when recreational sports facilities are developed everywhere for people to use them. There should be available gyms, swimming pools, football pitches, and basketball courts, as well as sports grounds with special equipment in courtyards and streets of any town or city. Therefore, people could get used to going in for sports daily or at least regularly from childhood, and find friends and create lasting friendships this way.
