A. Musical sounds fill our lives: from the music you share online to the songs playing in shops and restaurants, we are rarely far from music. Playing it can strengthen memory, help us pay attention, and perhaps even improve reading ability. Various brain functions, including hearing, sight, movement, and social awareness, are impacted by music. You do not have to be a Mozart to get the brain benefit of playing music, since it is so accessible and is more than just songs.

B. It can be particularly difficult for people who are hard of hearing to listen to music, sing or play an instrument. However, it is still possible. Thus, the classical composer Beethoven composed some of his finest music when he was extremely deaf. It is said that he put a wooden stick between his teeth and pushed it against the piano to feel the vibrations. Dame Evelyn Glennie is a famous musician who happens to be deaf. When practising and performing, she can feel the vibrations generated by her instruments.

C. Music is enjoyable and useful for brain development, but listening to loud music can counteract its benefits, or worse. If you ever experience ringing in your ears, even for a short time, you are risking some permanent damage to your ability to hear. So if you love listening to your music player, having band practice, or going to dances or concerts, it is important to try to keep the volume of the music down at a safe level.

D. Our brains possess a remarkable ability to make, store, and retrieve memories of music, even when we are not aware of doing so. For example, if you hear a catchy song, you will most likely be able to remember parts of it a few days later. After hearing it several times, you might know it by heart. Think about how much more effort it takes to learn information from a textbook, or to remember the details of day-to-day events in your life. Even more fascinating, musical memories seem to be resistant to brain diseases that cause memory loss.

E. Musical activities use lots of brain power. Imagine you are playing the piano. As you read the sheet music in front of you, your eyes tell your fingers which keys to play. Each key you play creates sound, and your ears and brain provide feedback about whether you have played the correct notes. You might be able to play a song by memory, and you can even make up your own song. These aspects of music provide the brain with a complete workout — one that relies on sound, vision, memory, creativity, social skills, and more.

F. Jazz is a form of American music that combines African rhythmic ideas with European harmony. Improvisation and personal expression are important parts of this music. In the 20th century, jazz changed from folk music to a high art form. The number of jazz styles increased as many musicians brought their ideas to the music. Now, jazz education is growing in some Asian countries, for example, in Thailand, which is becoming a regional jazz education centre, or China.

G. The most common way to explore the benefits of music is to look at the differences between professional musicians and someone with little or no musical training. An important discovery is that professional musicians are better at listening in noisy environments than non-musicians are. This means that they are good at hearing what people are saying at a party and they can ignore all the background noise. Musicians can gain this skill of listening better through years of practice.
