First conditional

We use the first conditional to speak about real situations in the present or future.

Construction:

if clause: if + Present Simple, main clause: Future Simple

If it rains tomorrow, we won't go for a walk.

Second conditional

We use the second conditional to speak about impossible or hypothetical situations in the present or future or to give somebody advice.

Construction:

if clause: if + Past Simple, main clause: would + bare infinitive

If Mary bought a ticket, she would go to the theatre with us today.

If I were you, I would take part in that competition.

We can use some other words instead of if:

  • unless means "if... not"
  • as long as and so long as mean "if"
  • provided (that) means "if"

Conditionals (first, second)

  1. We use Past Simple or Past Continuous after wish and if only to express general wishes or wishes about the present or future.

The professor wishes he was taking part in the conference on global warming instead of giving a lecture at the university.

  1. We use Past Perfect or Past Perfect Continuous after wish and if only to express wishes about the past.

If only I had found out about this yesterday. I wouldn't make such a grave mistake.

  1. We use would and the first form of the verb after wish and if only to express criticism or disappointment with the situation in the present or future.

I wish the audience would listen more attentively to the speakers.

  1. If people take some measures to prevent natural disasters now, they many problems in the future.
