Henry VIII fought back, switched from opposition to the Protestant Reformation and opposed Roman Catholicism. In 1534, he passed the Act of Supremacy. It meant that the king, not the pope, was the head of the Church in England. Henry VIII established the new Church of England. Then he forced all of the priests and bishops to accept him as the new leader. Anyone who refused was punished.

Henry VIII appointed himself the Head of Anglican Church.
