Модальные глаголы в английском языке выражают отношение к действию и ставятся перед смысловым глаголом без частицы to.

Модальный глагол must (mustn't) используется для выражения долженствования (обязанности), запрета (или его отсутствия), логического заключения:

You must clean your hands before dinner.

You mustn't smoke here.

He must be at the party now.

Модальный глагол have to используется, чтобы показать необходимость определённого действия:

You have (don't have) to be at the airport at 7 a.m.

Модальные глаголы should и ought to используются для выражения совета, возможности, критики, слабой степени долженствования:

You should consult the doctor if you feel unwell.

The temperature ought to be higher tomorrow.

He should have told us the truth.

You should tidy your room.

Модальный глагол can (can't) / could (couldn't) используется для выражения способности, возможности, предложения, разрешения:

Can you swim?

Speaking English can be hard.

Can I open the door?

Can I use your phone?

Модальные глаголы may и might используются для выражения разрешения, возможности, логического заключения:

May I come in?

Take a torch with you. You may get lost in the dark.

Your printer might be broken.

It is necessary for you to hoover the carpets.
