Fill in the gaps with the correct form of the given verbs
Past Simple/Continuous Formation
Past Simple
Some verbs are regular. The past simple of regular verbs is –ed: work – worked, jump – jumped, like – liked.
Remember:
- if a verb ends in a consonant +y, we change -y into -i+ed: cry – cried, marry – married;
- if a verb ends in a short vowel + a consonant, we double the consonant: stop – stopped, ban – banned.
Some verbs are irregular. We must remember their past simple form: run – ran, break – broke, take – took, say – said, etc.
We form past simple negatives, questions, and short answers with did:
I didn't see Mark yesterday.
A: Did you live in London when you were a child?
B: No, I didn't.
Past Continuous
We use was/were + -ing to form the past continuous:
I was having lunch when my mum came.
They weren't sleeping at 10 p.m. yesterday.
Were you sleeping when I called you? – Yes, I was.
Remember:
- if a verb ends in –e, we omit –e and add –ing: make – making, ride – riding;
- if a verb ends in a short vowel + a consonant, we double the consonant: swim – swimming, run – running;
- if a verb end is –ie, we change –ie into –y+ing: die – dying, lie – lying.
