It started in Paris in 1828 when a man called Stanislal Baudry introduced a two-level horse-drawn carriage. This carriage was called an omnibus. Adams & Co of Fairfield brought the idea to London in 1847. An omnibus became a fashionable [way|species|means|ride] of transport. It was initially drawn by horses.

In the 1920s, the double-decker bus became engine-powered. There were a lot of companies [giving|providing|selling|taking] bus transportation all over the city. The London General Omnibus Company wanted to make their buses special and [painted|drew|wrote|fixed] them bright red. In the 1930s, most of the bus companies joined London Passenger Transport Board. Miss Phyllis Thompson became the first female double-decker [rider|pilot|sailor|driver] in 1941.

In the 1950s, the most familiar model of the double-deckers appeared. It was called "The Routemaster". At first, it had an open back-door entrance. But it was quickly removed as people tended to jump on and off the bus while the bus was [sailing|moving|riding|running].
