If you ask about national dishes in different countries, most people will say for sure which dish they regard national. People believe that thin pancakes are from Russia, beetroot soup is from Ukraine, snails are eaten in France, pizza and pasta are Italian, and sushi is from Japan. But is it all true?

Caesar salad is an Italian dish, and it was called after the ancient Roman commander. Not true. It was invented by a chef Caesar Cardini in 1924 in one small restaurant in Tijuana, Mexico. There is a legend that on Independence Day, the 4th of July 1924, the restaurant was full, and the chef soon ran out of products. A very talented man decided to make a starter of the ingredients he had: lettuce, eggs, some cheese, garlic and bread. The visitors liked the salad, and it became very popular.

California roll is one of the most popular, but it's not Japanese. It was invented by Ichiro Mashita who worked at Tokyo Kaikan restaurant in Los Angeles in the 1970s. He noticed that the guests didn't like traditional Japanese dishes because of raw fish and tough nori. He decided to hide nori under rice and use crab meat, pieces of cucumber and avocado as a filler. In several years the dish became popular all over America and even abroad.

Pavlova cake is not from Russia. Anna Pavlova was a very famous Russian ballet dancer in the 1920s and a prima of Mariinsky Theatre. Once, when she was touring in Australia and New Zealand, she stayed in a big hotel. A local chef was her fan and wanted to surprise her with a fantastic dessert which he made. He named the dessert after her. Today there are more than 600 recipes of the dessert.

Pad thai is thought to be a traditional Thai dish. Each national restaurant in Thailand has that dish on its menu. But in reality, it is a dish that came from China. When Thai people tried fried noodles, they liked that dish a lot. Actually, "pad thai" is translated "in Thai style".
