Spit of Vasilievsky Island in St Petersburg
St Petersburg, known as the Venice of the North in Russia, has 33 big islands and some small ones. The Neva is the main river in the city with numerous canals and small rivers A \(\underline{ }\) .
Vasilyevsky Island is one of the biggest islands in the city with a very detailed system of roads and streets. It is situated across the river from the Winter Palace and occupies a large part of the city centre. The southeastern part of the island, washed by the Big and the Small Neva, B \(\underline{ }\) , known as the Spit of the island.
The Spit is one of the most beautiful sights in the city. The architectural ensemble is represented by two Rostral columns and the Stock Exchange building in the centre. Also, here are buildings of the Twelve Collegia, C \(\underline{ }\) , the Kunstkammer, a famous museum, the Novobirzhevoy Gostiny Dvor and the palace of the Tsaritsa Praskovia Fedorovna (the wife of Peter the Great's brother).
The spit is decorated with two massive pillars on both sides of the Stock Exchange Square. The height of each column is 32 meters. Initially, they served as D \(\underline{ }\) that was moved here in the 1720s.
The embankment of the Vasilievsky Island Spit is decorated with lion masks, huge granite balls E \(\underline{ }\) . It is a magnificent view over the Neva River from that spot. It is a five-star tourist destination and attracts both the locals and the city guests throughout the year. Traditionally, F \(\underline{ }\) come here to take beautiful photographs.
