Not everyone knows why exactly we cry. There are several reasons for this to happen: not only do the tears help to wash out toxins from our bodies and relieve stress, but also they clean our eyes from dirt and deliver important nutrients. Every year we produce from 15 to 30 gallons of tears. There are three types of tears. Basal tears are in our eyes all the time to help them stay lubricated and protect from infections. Reflex tears come when something foreign irritates our eyes, for example, onion fumes or dust. Emotional tears happen when you feel strong emotions like sadness, joy or anger. 98 % of tears is water, and the other 2 % contain salt, oils and proteins. Tears also have three layers: an inner mucus layer, that keeps the tear to the eye; a watery middle layer, that keeps the eye hydrated and protects it from bacteria; and an outer oily layer, that makes the tear's surface smooth and keeps the whole tear from evaporating. Naturally, when you cry, the tears travel through your tear ducts and drain into the small holes in your eyelids, but when there's too many emotional tears, they spill out of your eyes.
