based on Unit 2, Listening ex. 2 Listen to the texts and match them with their titles Text One. As London got bigger and bigger, its streets got busier and busier. There were trains, trams and buses but people wanted a better and faster way to travel. And then somebody had an idea to put trains under the streets, under the ground, and the London Underground opened in 1863. It's one of the oldest in the world. Today it has a lot of lines. There are 270 stations in London and 14 stations outside of it. Text Two. Centuries ago the River Thames was very important for London and the people who lived there. People took water from the river for drinking, cooking and washing. Ships from all over the world sailed up the river to London from the sea. These ships brought food, textiles and other useful things. There was one bridge across the river. It had lots of shops and houses on it. Text Three. Four hundred years ago people liked to have fun just as they do now. At that time the first theatres began to appear in London. A good example is the famous Globe Theatre for which Shakespeare, the great English dramatist, wrote his plays. Everybody loved going to the theatre in those days. Poor people and rich people, the young and the old went to the theatre to watch actors performing for the audience. Text Four. In the 18th century life in London was very different for rich people and poor people. Many poor people lived in bad dirty houses in the east of the city. Lots of families lived together in one house, with one family in a room. Rich people lived in big beautiful houses. They had many servants to look after them.
