Billy Elliot was never going to find life easy. Billy's mother died when he was young and both his older brother and father are miners involved in the 1984 miners strike. The family has very little money and emotions are high. And to make things worse, 11-year-old Billy prefers ballet to boxing.
This heartwarming, low-budget film follows Billy \(played by Jamie Bell\) as he secretly misses his boxing classes and joins the girls' ballet lessons. His talent is soon noticed by the local ballet teacher, Mrs Wilkinson \(Julie Walters\) and a friendly relationship develops between the two. She knows that ballet is physically tough and demanding, and is pleased to have such a talented pupil. Like all ballet teachers, she threatens and encourages him because she can see his great potential as a dancer. But she is also aware of his difficult family situation. Billy's father is furious when he discovers the truth and is ashamed of his son and his love of ballet.
Billy's father eventually accepts Billy's love of dance and takes him to London to audition for the famous Royal Ballet School. With his northern accent and lack of experience, Billy looks and feels out of place. The panel of judges seems cold and arrogant, and they are puzzled by this very unusual candidate. However, his amazing form of dancing shows a passion that they cannot ignore. And when they ask him how dancing makes him feel, he answers "It's like electricity". The judges are impressed by Billy's natural talent and offer him a place at their school.
The final scene shows Billy a few years later as the lead dancer in a professional production. His father is in the audience and cannot help but cry with pride. This is an entertaining hit that is not to be missed.
