The annual boat race between Oxford and Cambridge Universities is one of the oldest and most prestigious events in England's sporting calendar. The teams from the two universities go to the limits of their strength and endurance A______________. The first boat race took place on 10 June 1829. So, how did it all begin?

Cambridge student, Charles Merivale, and Oxford student, Charles Wordsworth, were good friends from their days B______________. Wordsworth often visited Merival at Cambridge and they went out rowing. Out of this friendship and rivalry in rowing came the challenge to an eight-man boat race between teams from the two universities.
