A. In 2020, UNESCO recognised the cultural importance of Singapore's unique hawker food centres when it added them to the Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Singapore is a multicultural nation, and nowhere is that more obvious than at the city's hawker markets. Hawker culture dates back to the 1960s, and although the centres have changed over time, becoming more regulated and organised, they've been a fixture of Singapore's culinary landscape for generations.
B.Christmas in Norway is inspired by many old traditions, including customs from Christianity but also from ancient pagan practices. One such tradition stems from the belief that on Christmas Eve, wicked spirits and witches come out to wreak havoc on the unprepared. The only solution is to take any and all brooms in the household and hide them. This prevents the witches from stealing them to fly on. To this day, many people still follow this tradition.
C.The Colosseum could seat 87,000 spectators, making it the largest amphitheatre in the world, according to the Guinness World Records. In comparison, London's ultra-modern Wembley Stadium can seat just a couple thousand more. While today's stadiums share many of the same characteristics of the Colosseum, there are, as you would imagine, some distinct differences — but not always for the better. As well as enjoying free entry, the stadium could empty in just 10 minutes. We can't say the same about any other big building in the world.
D.Do you really need to keep old emails forever? They contain a lot of personal details that could be useful to thieves. Also, under the Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986, emails stored on a web server — such as Google's Gmail — are considered "abandoned" after 180 days, and the government can access them without a warrant. Consider getting rid of old emails, possibly after downloading a copy. This protects your emails from both hackers and warrantless government surveillance.
E. The dark web is a collection of sites that you can't find with a regular search engine and that people can visit anonymously. As opposed to the "surface web" (the part of the Internet that anyone can access), the dark web is a subset of the "deep web", which houses password-protected medical and financial records, pages behind paywalls, and email accounts. The "deep web" rests below the surface and accounts for approximately 90% of all websites. It means that the dark web is much larger than the "surface web".
F.The Eiffel Tower is a global cultural icon of France and one of the most recognisable structures in the world. It took just two years for 300 workers to complete, and despite working on an open framework – and without the safety of intermediate floors – accidents were low, with only one man dying during construction. This is thought to have been due to the foresight of Gustave Eiffel, who had insisted upon safety precautions in the form of moveable stagings, guard rails, and screens.
G.Underwater crop circles have been a mystery since 1995 when divers in Japan first spotted these strange sculptures drawn in the sand. It took 18 years to reveal the underwater architect. It turns out that these geometric creations are the work of small pufferfish and are built to attract the attention of females. These unusual sand sculptures are around two metres in diameter. If a female likes what she sees, she will lay her eggs in the centre to be fertilised by the male.
