You've probably heard a lot about climate change and how you should reduce your carbon footprint. But what is that exactly? Just like an actual footprint, it's a mark you leave upon the environment. No, not with your shoes but with every action that releases "carbons". Those are harmful gases, such as CO2. The more energy that is used the more harmful gases will be released. And the bigger the footprint will be.
You may think that by driving a car, the only carbons you release come from the engine. No! Consider the energy which is needed to get the oil from underground and the pollution caused by transportation and delivery to your local petrol station. Not to mention that carbons which are released at the factory where a car is produced. Actually, you and everything you have has its own carbon footprint. For example, an activity such as reading a book is not that harmless. Just think of the printing of the book and the transportation of it. All that uses energy.
Even something as basic as eating an apple is not completely harmless to the environment. It could have travelled hundreds of kilometres before you bought it in your local supermarket. Moreover, for transportation, a lot of packaging is used. Everything I have mentioned contributes to different kinds of pollution - air pollution, water pollution, etc.
You see, it's pretty much impossible to leave no carbon footprint behind. But maybe you can make your footprint just a little bit smaller.
