В английском языке, как и в русском, существуют три степени сравнения прилагательных: положительная, сравнительная и превосходная. Они называются так: positive, comparative и superlative.

Если прилагательное состоит менее чем из трёх слогов, то формы образуются при помощи суффикса -er в сравнительной степени и при помощи определённого артикля the и суффикса -est в превосходной.

Пример: big — bigger — the biggest.

Если слово длинное, то формы образуются при помощи слов more и the most.

Пример: beautiful — more beautiful — the most beautiful.

Существуют также слова-исключения, которые сильно меняются при образовании форм степеней сравнения. Их нужно запомнить.

Примеры: good — better — the best; bad — worse — the worst.
