The family is a social system based on marriage or consanguinity the members of which are linked by a common way of life, by mutual moral responsibility. It performs certain functions, which include not only reproductive, which consists in procreation, and economic, but also psychological, social and moral, socialisation and spiritual and moral. The latter is manifested in the influence on the development of family members. Indeed, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, if we have them, influence us from the moment we are born. Wishing children a better life, trying to raise not an insensitive monster, but a compassionate and merciful personality, parents bring them up, showing them "what is good and what is bad" with specific examples. They lay the foundation of the individual, build his personality brick by brick.

According to scientists, originally wild people descended from monkeys, lived in communities. The procreation instinct encouraged men (males) to fight among themselves for the right to possess a woman (female), i.e. for having sex with her. The latter admitted only the strongest and most active to themselves in order to have healthy offspring. Psychic evolution allowed men to understand that if you bring a "mammoth" to your chosen one, protect her from wild animals, you can become her constant partner.
The first families, which over time changed their appearance, organisation, acquired new conditions of existence, internal responsibilities. Women also changed their priorities: a constant partner gave stability, protection, food, shelter and protection in return for her favour. So the first families began to appear which over time changed their appearance, organisation, acquired new conditions of existence and internal responsibilities.

The most ancient form of family life is the totemic clan which has survived to this day among some Australian tribes. All members of the genus have a common name, they do not have individual names. A totemic clan is based on belief in a common ancestor of all members of the genus: usually, an animal is considered to be such. Clan members believe they have the best qualities of this ancestor. In a family of this type, there is a group marriage, and therefore the father of the children cannot be established, and the origin is determined by the maternal line.

In modern society, the family is undergoing qualitative changes. They are associated with the global social processes of industrialisation, globalisation, urbanisation, unusual pre-industrial (traditional, agrarian) society. Traditions, norms of behaviour, the nature of relations between spouses, parents and children are tested by life.

In the first type—in the patriarchal family—the individual is subordinate to the community, acts as a single and indivisible unit. In the second type of family, all property is transferred to one heir, chosen by the father. The rest of the children migrate, returning to the parent's nest in case of life failures. The third type is an unstable family—a character in a modern society involved in the process of industrialisation and urbanisation. In an unstable family, there are no material resources that can be passed on to descendants, parents and children live apart.

The number of patriarchal families is currently declining. A Family of a Partner Type is developing, in which the authority of a woman as a person, mother, wife increases. Such a family involves the joint management of the household by the spouses, the upbringing of children, and mutual support. In connection with urbanisation processes, relations between relatives are weakening. A multiparty family (extended, related) is destroyed—a family that includes, along with spouses and children, other relatives (grandparents, etc.), where representatives of 2–3 generations conduct joint farming and organise everyday life. Currently, there are about 40 million families in Russia. The majority of them consist of spouses with children, that is, they are nucleic.
