What do people find in fantasy novels?

What is the fantasy genre?
What are some great examples of fantasy literature?
When did fantasy appear?
What are fantasy books about?
A. Fantasy is a kind of literature that features magical and supernatural elements that do not exist in the real world. Although some writers use a real-world setting with ‘a drop of magic’, many create entirely imaginary universes with their own physical laws and logic and populations of imaginary races and creatures. While all writing requires imagination, fantasy is a playground for those who want to push the limit of theirs.
B. Fantastical elements have always been a part of storytelling, as evidenced by the gods, and magic found in ancient mythologies, folklore, and religious texts around the globe. Fantasy in literature is much more recent and differs from its predecessors because its authors are known and both they and their audiences understand the works to be fictitious. Modern fantasy began in the nineteenth century and reached its glory a century later.
C. Fantasy is a broad and diverse genre, but in its heart it’s centred around common literary storylines: the battle of good and evil, tradition vs. change, coming of age, love and betrayal etc. What sets fantasy apart from other genres is being free from reality. All stories feature magic that plays a large role in their plots: superpowers that change the character’s life, prophecies of a “chosen one” or an impending doom.
D. There is some overlap between these three literary genres, but each has distinct characteristics that set them apart. Fantasy has no basis in scientific fact or speculation. By contrast, sci-fi features technology and natural or technological scenarios that are currently possible or may realistically become possible in the future. And, unlike the other two genres, horror is primarily focused on mood. Its fundamental aim is to create an unsettling atmosphere and provide the reader with a sense of fear and dread.
E. The answer to this question is definitely a matter of personal preference in literature. The author that influenced the whole genre and readers’ expectations of it is J. R. R. Tolkien with The Lord of the Rings (1954-1955). Both creatively and commercially successful, the epic turned the genre into the mainstream. Since then hundreds of great books have been written. Some of them received wide recognition, like Terry Brooks’ The Sword of Shannara (1977), the first fantasy novel that appeared on the bestseller list or J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter novels (1997-2007) that became the best-selling book series of all time.
F. Whether it be Harry Potter, The Lord of The Rings, or The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the readers of this segment have one major thing in common and that is they read fantasy novels to be immersed in another world. The power of fantasy gives its lovers an outlet to a whole new universe, one that is fresh, unexplored, and just begging for an adventurer, or a bookworm, or a wizard. That is the remarkable power of fantasy world-building and why these people choose fantasy novels.
