There is a wonderful museum in a quiet
lane near the Garden Ring in Moscow.
The museum is the house of Viktor Vasnetsov, a famous
Russian artist \(1848–1926\). Viktor Vasnetsov created
the Neo-Russian style which is based on the use of old methods of the medieval
Russian architecture, arts and crafts.
The museum looks really unusual. Its
windows are in the form of a kokoshnik. There is an
ancient gate. If you want to find out what an old time Russian house looked

This teremok, as
the Muscovites often call it for its shape and decorations looking like a
Russian fairytale house, was built by Viktor Vasnetsov
with his own money and to his own architectural design. He had to ask for the
permission of the Moscow
governor Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich,
who was the Emperor’s uncle, because he wanted to build a house made of wood
while wooden construction was not allowed because of fire safety regulations.
Vasnetsov’s
style had a great impact on the development of art in the early 20th century in
Russia.
During his life Viktor Vasnetsov created a number of
paintings which became national symbols. Most of his pictures were bought by Pavel Tretyakov and they are now
in the Tretyakov Gallery. The Viktor Vasnetsov museum was established in 1953 and became a part
of the Tretyakov Gallery in 1986. Many of the
exhibits in the museum were made by Viktor Vasnetsov
to his designs. A visit to this museum will give you both a chance to find
yourself in a Russian house of the late 19th century and to see the world
through the eyes of the brilliant Russian artist.
