A)[Proprioception | The fifth element | Phantom sensation | Basic senses | Extrasensory perception | How many senses we have]

Human beings, as well as most animals, possess at least five senses: sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch. These "traditional" senses are the most familiar to all of us. They were first enlisted (or at least first documented) by the famous Greek philosopher Aristotle. All of these senses are vital and their loss is an extreme stress for any organism. Nevertheless, some scientists say that when you lose one of the senses, all the rest get heightened in order to improve your ability to survive and compensate for the loss.

B)[Proprioception | The fifth element | Phantom sensation | Basic senses | Extrasensory perception | How many senses we have]

One of the scientifically proved basic senses is the ability to sense the position, location and movement of the body and its parts. This sense is crucial for complicated movements like reaching your nose with your eyes closed, for example. When you walk, you don't have to look at your feet. When you take a fragile object like a raw egg, you unconsciously know how to move your arm, how big the pressure of your grip should be to hold the egg firmly but not to break it.

C)  [Proprioception | The fifth element | Phantom sensation | Basic senses | Extrasensory perception | How many senses we have]

Have you ever heard the phrase "the sixth sense"? By this, people usually mean the ability to learn information without using the basic senses like sight or hearing. This concept can include such abilities as telepathy, intuition or the ability to see events in the future called future vision. Although these abilities have no scientific pieces of evidence, they still provide a very popular topic for discussion.

D)[Proprioception | The fifth element | Phantom sensation | Basic senses | Extrasensory perception | How many senses we have]

Some of the basic senses like sight and smell are well-known, others like proprioception or balance are less familiar. Nevertheless, we all possess most of them and use them in our daily life. Today, most senses are well studied, but the quantity of them is yet to be agreed. Some people say there are five senses, others enlist six or seven, neurologists agree on nine — the number rises up to twenty-one. Scientists use various methods and classifications. This results in the absence of one and only opinion on this matter.

E) [Proprioception | The fifth element | Phantom sensation | Basic senses | Extrasensory perception | How many senses we have]

There is a number of extraordinary sensations we might have. One of them is feeling one's amputated limbs. According to statistics, 80 to 100% of individuals with amputations still have senses in their absent body parts. Even animals deal with these sensations and try to use their missing limb. Despite all the researches, the reasons for this is still unknown.
