A) Contrary to fiction, this book genre deals with facts, real events and people. It includes biographies, essays, memoirs, reports, etc. It provides information and opinions on different topics and can be objective or sometimes subjective. Nowadays non-fiction writers use some literary tools of fiction to make their books more exciting to read. It’s called creative nonfiction.

B) Books about solving crimes became popular in Victorian times. Edgar Allan Poe is considered a founder of the modern genre, although there were detective stories even in ancient times. A lot of characters became reader’s favourites, for example, Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes. The so-called golden age of detective fiction was the beginning of the XX century.

C) What if dragons and magicians existed? Well, fantasy books open the door to a lot of imaginary worlds where magic is a real thing, as well as fantastic creatures and supernatural abilities. Legends, fairy tales and myths often have a huge influence on fantasy novels and stories. Some authors create very complex worlds and even languages (for example, J.R.R. Tolkin made up several languages).

D) It’s short for ‘science fiction’ and this genre is all about advanced technologies and science. Like fantasy, it tells about unreal, imaginary things, but the action almost always takes place in the future, distant or not. It deals with possible impact of imaginary technology, artificial intelligence and science on humankind, society and the world.

E) This book format is a combination of art and literature. It’s not just illustrations, because visual content tells as much (if not more) than the text. Comic books and graphic novels are not synonyms. Graphic novels are usually longer, have more complex narratives and plots. Graphic novels are becoming more and more popular nowadays.
