7. How can following trends do us harm?
A. Everywhere we go online, trends follow us. When we learn about a new idea or thing that is becoming popular, we want to watch it, use it, or buy it. When something is trending, we take its level of popularity as proof. We think that if everyone is talking about it on the Internet, there must be a reason. So we copy other people's tastes, interests, and behaviours.
B. The good side of participating in a trend is that people feel comfortable with others and with themselves. This happens because the more we look and behave like others, the less shy we feel. We know that people will like us, think that we are "cool" and "popular". Participating in trends can also give us a sense of community — there are so many people who think and look like us!
C. Trends destroy our freedom to choose, our own tastes, and preferences. Online, we create multiple personalities on various social networks or apps, and we copy the behaviour connected to each platform. But when we wear the same clothes or mimic someone’s behaviour, we are losing ourselves. Unfortunately, it's difficult to realise this if you are focused on making sure that you fit in.
D. Some people think being different is bad because it can make a person feel alone. However, the truth is when we are ourselves, we find a community that supports us. It can be scary to be different from the people around us, but being unique is important because it gives us our true value. When you are true to yourself, you are less likely to be influenced by the norms and expectations of others.
E. Developing your individuality can also have a positive effect on the people around you, for example, your classmates By being true to yourself, you can inspire your friends to do the same, which leads to a more diverse and accepting society. This causes the exchange of ideas and opinions and leads to a better understanding of each other.
F. It is important to remember that finding and keeping your individuality takes time and effort. It is a journey that requires being patient, open-minded, and willing to grow personally. What is more, it is a good idea to find a few people to support your first steps. They can be your closest ones, like your parents or friends — just make sure they will not criticise you.
