A. Seville is the fourth largest city in Spain, and is the capital city and financial centre of Andalusia. It has one of the largest preserved old city centres in Europe, where you can see the traces of its long history in its many architectural styles, from the Arabic period through the late medieval, renaissance, and baroque. According to the legends, Seville was founded by Hercules who sailed nearby and found a tiny settlement at the current site of Seville.
B. In 1519, Ferdinand Magellan sailed from Seville with 5 ships. His plan was to sail west to reach India. Only one ship returned to Seville, but not with Magellan. He had died during the historic voyage. Having survived storms and mutinies, Magellan was killed by Islanders in the Philippines, but his fleet sailed on. The rest of the crew were the first people to sail completely around the Earth.
C. Of course, the most famous explorer to ever sail from Seville was Christopher Columbus. As a well-known American poem says, "In fourteen hundred ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue." And on October 12th he landed on an island in the Bahamas. That's how the discovery and exploration of the American continents started. Columbus later went on to make three more trips to the New World.
D. The Alcázar is an ancient Royal Palace in Seville. It is one of the oldest palaces in Spain still in use. Surprisingly, the upper floors of Alcázar are still used by the Spanish Royal family as the official King's residence. The building of Alcázar was also used in a popular TV show Game of Thrones to recreate the residence of a princess.
E. Christopher Columbus had met with King Ferdinand and his wife Queen Isabella in Alcázar in Seville before he started his expedition. If that meeting hadn't happened, the history of North and South America might have been completely different. It changed life in Seville a lot as well: after Columbus' expedition, Seville started to grow quickly. The reason was simple: all the goods brought from America were required to pass through a special agency in Seville before being sent to the rest of Spain. So, this procedure brought a lot of money to the city.
F. Seville and its sights appeared in many movies and TV-shows. Interesting to know, that it was the location for an episode of one of the most well-known British series Doctor Who in 1975. In the 2016 movie Assassin's Creed, master assassins escape execution and are pursued by Templars through the city of Seville. In Mission Impossible 2 the main character goes to Seville to complete his mission (however, the Spanish scenes were in fact shot in Australia!).
