Two people were asked about the impact of mobile phones on students. Read their answers and decide if the statements are True, False, or Not stated.

Melanie

We can debate a lot but cell phones definitely play a big role in the life of a student. They help us organise our lives, there are a lot of apps to assist with that. We can mark events in the calendar, make a schedule or to-do list, and set up notifications. Mobile phones can become pocket libraries. On the Internet we can find everything for reading and studying. We can contact our friends or teachers and understand something we don't know. There are apps that help us do our homework or explain a concept to us. A mobile phone allows us to watch educational videos on social networks to understand something better. We can also listen to music to calm us down.

However, mobile phones can be a big distraction. They can be bad for the eyesight and sometimes they can harm our health. They might explode if mishandled. Social media with terrible content can be very, very harmful. It's hard to concentrate if you use a mobile phone without a break. But remember, a thing is only as bad as you make it out to be. It all depends on how we use it.

Jessica

It's a big, constant distraction for students. You literally cannot pay attention to the phone and the teacher at the same time, no matter how many people have told you that you are different, a "digital native". I think that a mobile phone was designed from the very beginning to mold you, to get your attention (with notifications), to distract you into an online world. You scroll for a few minutes — but in reality, it can be more like 45 minutes.

I feel that, as teachers, we could be in a unique position to help our students learn how to use a phone as a tool, and not let it use you. It can be beneficial for them in studying if they use it in the right way or in the case of emergency if they need to contact their family quickly.
