C Jane and Harry were looking forward to a quiet retirement when Harry read about an unpaid teaching post in a tiny village in Africa. After a lot of thought they decided to apply. "We live a very simple life now. Home is a thatched hut, water is from the river and we grow our own food." But Jane and Harry have no intention of leaving the village. The children are eager to attend the lessons and Jane and Harry say their real reward is a child's smile at the end of the day.

F When Natasha went to England to study English, she was determined to take advantage of any opportunity to practise speaking the language. One of her teachers suggested that she should volunteer to work in a local Red Cross charity shop that sells second-hand goods to raise funds. "Working here allows me to practise everything I am learning in my classes and more. My English has improved so much," she says. "In addition, it is wonderful to know that I am helping people locally and internationally, too."
